The Shekinah Quilt Project has many elements and is the result of a collaboration between Alison Archer-Lock, a textile enthusiast and Paul Singleton, a textile designer.

The project began by trying to bring about a positive outcome to the confines of the Covid restrictions, and so, the Shekinah Quilt Project began when Paul Singleton invited Alison Archer-Lock to use his textile samples to make a quilt. From the outset, the idea was to create a quilt that we could raffle or auction to raise money for a charity.

Our chosen charity is Shekinah, based in Plymouth, Devon. Shekinah is doing fantastic work to support the homeless and help build lives in the Southwest of England. You can find out more about their great work at www.shekinah.co.uk and Instagram @shekinahcharity

The Shekinah Quilt is now available to win by entering our raffle. Tickets cost £5 for 5, all proceeds going to Shekinah.

Alison and I decided it would be a great idea to repurpose many of the fabric samples that had been made as print trials in my design studio and use them to make the quilt. You might say it was something like taking an artist’s sketchbook and using all the pages to make a huge collage.

After Paul had designed and printed the fabrics in his design studio in Liverton, Alison got to work, cutting, sewing, and stitching, working from her garden sewing studio on the edge of Haytor. The finished piece is a large, bold, playful contemporary quilt, printed and made by hand. It measures 230cm x 230cm.

The quilt and other artworks will be exhibited in Paul’s design studio at Black Barns, Gorse Blossom Farm, TQ12 6FU (venue no. 124) during Devon Open Studio, 11th to 26th September. Details of opening times, location etc. can be found at https://devonopenstudios.co.uk All the proceeds from the raffle will be given to Shekinah in support of their great work. You can buy raffle tickets in person when you visit during Open Studios or by contacting via Instagram @caveandcastledesign or email [email protected] The raffle will be drawn on Monday 27th September at 10am and the winner notified.
